Sunderland returns to the Premier League after eight years. ‘The Black Cats’ won a match worth 200 million euros against Sheffield United on Saturday: 2-1.
Sheffield took the lead in the 25th minute thanks to a goal by Tyrese Campbell. The forward scored on a pass from Hamer. The midfielder was also important for Sheffield on Monday with a goal in the semi-final against Bristol City.
A few minutes after the opening goal, Sheffield scored again. But after intervention by the VAR, Harrison Burrows’ goal was disallowed for offside. Fifteen minutes before time, Eliezer Mayenda scored the equalizer in a fine manner. An extension seemed to be in the making, but Tom Watson secured the win for Sunderland in extra time.
The final of the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League is also called the 200 million euro match. That amount is earned by a team if they play at the highest level in England for at least one season.
Sunderland, which last played at the highest level in 2017, finished fourth in the Championship. The numbers three through six play play-offs for promotion.
Earlier, champion Leeds United and Burnley were promoted to the Premier League. Ruud van Nistelrooij’s Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton were relegated to the Championship.
