The Giro d’Italia was shaken up on Saturday by a crash in the peloton. Isaac del Toro strengthened his leading position in the general classification, while Kasper Asgreen booked an impressive stage victory.
The most important moment of the fourteenth stage took place more than 20 kilometers from the finish in Slovenian Nova Gorica. Part of the peloton crashed on a rain-soaked cobblestone street.
The damage was enormous, especially among the classification men. Giulio Ciccone was in a lot of pain and remained sitting on the ground for a long time. Primoz Roglic, Juan Ayuso and Antionio Tiberi also had to chase. Pink jersey wearer Del Toro was with the front part of the peloton.
In this group, Visma-Lease a Bike determined the tempo in the service of sprinter Olav Kooij and classification man Simon Yates. However, the Dutch formation fell short to catch the unleashed fugitive Asgreen. The Dane from EF Education-EasyPost had a sixteen-second lead left.
In the standings, Del Toro now has a 1.20 minute lead over the new number two Simon Yates. Asgreen’s teammate Richard Carapaz was also in the front part of the peloton and climbed to fourth place.
