Koevermans misses Grand Slam debut after loss qualifications Roland Garros

Anouk Koevermans failed to reach the main tournament of Roland Garros. The Dutch tennis player lost in the semi-finals of the qualifying tournament to Justina Mikulskyte: 7-6 (3) and 6-2.

After a marathon match against Anastasia Zakharova, Koevermans was the only Dutch player to reach the second round of the qualifiers. The world number 178 could dream of the main tournament in Paris and needed three victories for that. But she was no match for the Lithuanian Mikulskyte.

In the first set, Koevermans fell behind 4-1. She fought her way back to a tiebreak, but Mikulskyte (WTA-223) was too strong in it. The 21-year-old from South Holland lost her service game three times in a row in the second set. Mikulskyte served for the match at 5-2 and used her first match point.

The second round of the qualifying tournament in Paris is an improvement for Koevermans compared to her qualifying tournament at the Australian Open. In Melbourne, Koevermans played a qualifying tournament for a Grand Slam for the first time last January. The daughter of former tennis player Mark Koevermans was eliminated in the first round.

The main tournament of Roland Garros starts next Sunday. Five Dutch players have been admitted directly to the main draw. For the men, Tallon Griekspoor, Botic van de Zandschulp and Jesper de Jong will make their appearance. For the women, Suzan Lamens and Arantxa Rus will participate.
