A 34-year-old Dutch man died on Thursday afternoon during a hike on the Spanish island of Mallorca. He is suspected to have become unwell due to the heat, according to several Spanish media outlets.

Emergency services found the man unconscious after receiving an emergency call around 3 p.m.

Two ambulances, a local doctor, police officers, and the fire department were on the scene. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but help was no longer possible.

In the town of Sóller, where the man became unwell, temperatures rose to 31 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Spanish media write that the man probably died as a result of the heat.

If your body gets too hot and can no longer get rid of that heat, you can get sunstroke. “This can be caused by extreme heat, excessive humidity, or exertion in the heat,” a general practitioner explained to NU.nl earlier.

The local medium Crónica Balear warns people to pay attention to the symptoms of sunstroke, such as an increased heart rate, headache, dizziness, vomiting, and (the feeling of) fainting.
