The first walkers started the 107th edition of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches on Tuesday morning. Participants were called upon this year to bring extra pairs of dry socks. Rain is expected in the Nijmegen area in the coming days.
At 4:00 AM, the first runners departed for the 50-kilometer distance. Later in the early morning, the participants walking 40 and 30 kilometers will follow.
All 47,000 available places have been allocated this year, but not everyone has reported. 1,461 people who had registered did not register in Nijmegen in recent days and are therefore not participating in the walking event. How many people actually started will become clear later on Tuesday.
The first day traditionally takes the runners through the Betuwe region, during the so-called Day of Elst, also known as Blue Tuesday. This includes crossing the dike between Lent and Oosterhout, through the blue-decorated village of Elst, to return to Nijmegen via Bemmel.
The Red Cross has advised participants to bring extra pairs of dry socks this edition. Rain is expected in Nijmegen and the surrounding area in the coming days. This can create an “extra challenge”.
According to Weeronline, there may be some local showers over Nijmegen on Tuesday afternoon. There is also a chance that these showers will largely pass the region. Later in the evening, when most runners are over the finish line, the showers will increase.
Wednesday will be changeable, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially in the morning. The chance of showers will decrease again on Thursday, although they may remain. Friday will be sunny and summer-like warm.
