At the age of 102 years and 51 days old, Kokichi Akuzawa reached the top of the Japanese mountain Fuji earlier this month. This makes the Japanese the oldest person ever climbed the mountain.
As honorary chairman of the Gunma Mountaineering Club, Kokichi climbs a mountain almost every week. In 2022 he climbed the NaWakaryama (1,272 meters high) in honor of his 99th birthday.
But last August he wanted to do what none of his age had done, climbing Mount Fuji. He did that before when he was 96. But this year he wanted to take the attempt again after he had recovered from heart failure.
The Japanese and his climbing friends started the climb on 3 August at 8.40 am via the Yoshida route. That is of the four routes they are the easiest, but that didn’t make it easy, writes Ginness World Records.
Normally climbers travel the route in a day, but Kokichi decided to spread his climb over three days. He spent two days in Hutten. On August 5 at 11 am he successfully reached the top of the Berg.
“It was tough,” says the Japanese. “It felt very different from the last time I climbed the mountain. I am surprised that I made the top. Without everyone’s help I would not have been possible. I am satisfied now.”
When asked if he would take the trip again, he joked: “Never again”. “If you ask me next year, you might get a different answer, but for now I am happy with this climb.”
